Slacker, Re: TXN CC (trash talking CDMA) and>>
+ ”They talk repeatedly about the strength in WCDMA. TI is more bullish on WCDMA right now than Qualcomm. They dont need to talk explicitly about GSM moving to WCDMA because the trend is widely known and their share in WCDMA is pretty close to their share of wireless overall.
+ OTOH, the move of CDMA operators to GSM represents a clear revenue opportunity for TI.”
My prior comments re: TXN talking-up GSM conversions to WCDMA were of course “tongue-in-cheek ( as I’m sure you gathered).
IMO, this is something Qualcomm should be doing to counter the CDMA “trash talk” by the opposition. The conversion of 2 + billion GSM subs WCDMA represents multi-mega revenue streams to Qualcomm with high handset ASPs.
OTOH, although “the move of CDMA operators to GSM represents a clear revenue opportunity for TI” it is magnitudes smaller because of 1) the low / ultra low tier ASPs, and 2) the number of subs involved are magnitudes smaller that 2 + billion.
In the “battle of PR’s” (NOK + TXN + GSMA/ GSA, etc, etc, vs basically QCOM), Qualcomm should now play off the GSA latest PR stats with a couple of eye opening charts.
“GSA recently announced that there are 108 commercial WCDMA operators in 47 countries. The majority are enabling HSDPA in their networks as the new baseline for 3G globally. According to more GSA research, 96 operators have committed to HSDPA in 48 countries, of which 23 networks are delivering commercial services in 18 countries in Asia, North America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.”
