I don't think it's proper use of the word "pork" to use it to refer to all government spending, is it? Some government spending is necessary. I think "pork" means discretionary spending that is oriented towards making politicians popular in their district or state. Craney Island has the navy's biggest fuel facility. globalsecurity.org Expanding Craney Island will add extra harbor facilities for the Norfolk-Portsmouth-Chesapeake-Newport News - Hampton Roads port complex, which is the Navy's biggest port on the Atlantic coast. This project has been in the works for decades. nao.usace.army.mil The Navy is one of the biggest employers in VA, and certainly in that region! Hard to believe that Jim Webb, a man who graduated from the Naval Academy, served in the Marines at Quantico and in the office of the Secretary of the Navy, never heard of this project! This type of thing is where the rubber hits the road when it comes to the daily grind of being a representative of your constituents in Washington. You're the point man. You have to live and breathe this stuff. It won't help Dionne sell newspapers and it won't make Daily Kos get all excited, but this is the job.
