Juan Cole appears to have picked a very controversial position in a very controversial field -- kicking over some ant nests on the way. I think it's not about what he says, it's the way he says it. The thing that makes me squeamish about this particular discussion is that I seem to be picking up on a subtext that Cole's in trouble for criticizing Israel -- that he didn't do anything anybody else hasn't done but the pro-Israel crowd is singling him out because (as I have seen alleged many places) you can't criticize Israel and get away with it in American public life. To reduce to the ugliest expression, Cole's a victim of the Jooos who run everything! (I don't think Cole himself says this.) None of the bloggers commenting on Cole are anywhere near as vituperative as Cole in their own academic blogs. JMHO. Given the level of free floating hostility which surrounds war, this is a very fraught topic. juancole.com
