Somewhere in the discussion or articles posted over the last few days was the point that professors should teach the subject, not preach some agenda that may or may not be related. If we can't select professors based on their ability to perform that criterion, well, good grief.

That's not temperament, at least as I understand it. Your earlier reference to "hostility" is closer.

As for profs who evangelize, the promotion and tenure process should catch it. It's certainly a no no for teaching evaluations. Well, at least where I've been sufficiently close to the process to observe/participate.

It would definitely be a no no at the kind of institutions that were under discussion in the Cole conversation. Just too unseemly. (Love that word.)
