Instead, he said Hezbollah had thought Israel would respond to the soldiers' capture by snatching Hezbollah leaders in commando raids and that negotiations for a swap would start, giving Hezbollah the chance to try to win the release of Lebanese prisoners held by Israel.

Who'd a thunk that Butcher Sharon would respond with restraint, while non-military pol Olmert would attack?

Hizbullah does not understand how decisions get made in democracies, that much is plain.

Arik Sharon was uniquely barred from a Lebanese invasion because of his 1982 history. Olmert is not, and has something to prove regarding his willingness to fight for Israel and to re-establish deterrence against Hamas and Hizbullah, who had begun believing their own claims about Israeli weakness.
