Goes against our inherently simian natures.

Some people are more simian than others.

Faultline then, and Dale now, enforces civility by booting people who won't be civil.

What we get in civil forums is the Marketplace of Ideas, where we can bump up against other ideas and learn whether our own ideas are valid, or invalid. This is only of value if you care whether your ideas are valid and are willing to entertain the possiblity that they may be invalid.

I like the argument that teaching people to argue the other side makes them moderate their positions. Seems to me like this is either an innate talent, or a talent which is taught to young people, or a talent achieved by trial and error by older people, any of the three.

But it's entirely possible, even likely, that any given individual can be born uncivil, never taught civility, and never learned the value of civility. They're incorrigible, and need to be consigned to another forum until they learn better manners (if ever).
