Much of this discussion misses the point.

The Bush Administration's chumminess with Big Oil has led to an energy policy that preserves the status quo and leaves us little closer to the goal of becoming energy independent.

Though Bush has talked about funding research for alternative fuels, he hasn't really provided any leadership in that regard, nor any meaningful money. What we need to do is to initiate a national effort along the lines of Kennedy's moon race, with the goal of reducing our oil consumption by at least half within 10 years. Putting the full technological might of this country to the task we could get that done.

Not going to happen with this administration.
