Re: "Absurd idea..."

Just curious: why do you believe it's 'absurd'?

Before divorce laws were liberalized (mostly in the 1970s, with the advent of 'no-fault' divorce in California and elsewhere) that was the PREDOMINENT ARGUMENT against divorce --- that it attacked the 'sanctity' of marriage, the 'institution' of marriage. The argument wasn't often called 'absurd' then....

(Personally, I believe that the availability of divorce makes marriage more meaningful... because those who stay together are more apt to really want to be married, and are not merely afraid of legal complications. But I'm sure there are some here who would disagree with that [I'm thinking perhaps 'Pro'] and who might prefer to ban divorce, just as they would also prefer to use the power of the government to ban birth control technologies, etc.)

I'm sure it doesn't escape your notice that to enforce massive changes in social norms, mores, etc., (whether these desired 'social changes' be called 'liberal' or called 'conservative') ALWAYS requires a bigger, more intrusive government as the hammer with which to 'beat' the society into the shape desired....
