The hunters were hunting the monkeys for food. Yummy roasted monkey.

Monkeys carry a form of HIV, same way that skunks carry rabies, they have it but it doesn't effect them. The virus mutated to where it can infect humans and it will kill humans. The theory is that one of the hunters ate some RAW monkey and got the virus and passed it on. STDs are rampant in Africa which left sores and weakened immune systems which helped it spread. My advice is never to eat the monkey raw.
