the answer to the question of the recommendation
function on posts is now evident...

i see that SI has added a data field (on the
page that lists 50 posts at a time) to show the
number of recommendations (if any) for each post.

now THAT is helpful... and will be increasingly
useful as people begin to understand and use the feature.

this will be great for those of us who may not visit
a busy thread for quite a while and don't have time
to read 500 or 1,000 posts to "catch up". if people
use the recommend function properly they'll give
a rec to the posts they feel are most important to
read. then slackers like me can read just the ones
with recommendations, eh?
