Actually, until a few years ago Divorce was illegal in the Philippines also. What I witnessed when I was there was this:
A married woman stayed in her home and was supported by her husband in the manner she was accustomed too. Meanwhile the husband took on a mistress outside the home. None of this was required by law but by social custom (ie support of wife) and it was considered really BAD MANNERS to bring the mistress home. All this was so common among the upper class that I would say it was almost a given. jdn
