Unfortunately, being stupid has advantages. Did I read somewhere that before the war Bush had no idea that Iraqi Shiites and Sunnis were bitter enemies - so the current mess is not his fault?

I still doubt Bush knew Abramoff personally, even though he met him and undoubtedly knew Abramoff was a major contributor. Clinton was associated with similar characters via the political process.

The political operatives decide on the election spoils. There are hundreds of people on presidential transition teams - most of them figureheads - just like ambassadorships a few decades ago. Raise a few hundred grand and get an ambassidorship to the Figi Islands or someplace with nice palms.

I don't mean to discount the damage people like Abramoff do to the political process - it's just that we need to focus on the congressmen and their aids, those who actually wandered far across that often fuzzy line that separates right and wrong in politics.
