Funny how Lieberman gets their support for doing exactly that, defying his own party and reaching across the aisle on a major issue. Maybe the "principle" changes depending on whether a politician conforms to their POV?

I take the "their" to be conservative Republicans. I guess, but really don't know, that it's a version of your version. Lieberman's clearly not part of the group but gets points for supporting them on some central causes; McCain is borderline part of the group but has made some very strong statements against social conservatives in the past. Despite his recent hand holding with them.

I think the social consevatives feel so burned by the Rep party over the long haul that they are very wary, very wary. Reagan didn't give them what they wanted; GWB's father certainly didn't; GWB is only half heartedly doing so. Etc.

One of the genuinely interesting senate races this fall is the Rep primary in Rhode Island for the seat now held by Lincoln Chafee. As I recall, the social conservatives have put up one of their own. And there is little doubt should that candidate win the Rep primary, the Dems will win the election. After all, it's Rhode Island.

I skimmed it at Barnes and Nobles the other morning and found it more interesting than I expected. I doubt I'll read it but it might interest you. In some ways it's a call for a centrist Rep Party and harking back to heritage Dean thinks is actually available.

Not my cup of tea. But might interest you.
