I think you're very wrong on that....his heritage had many influences on him vis-a-vis ethnicity (his parents were secular), but clearly he was a brilliant, independent thinker who, for a lifetime, tried to understand the laws of the universe. He went further than anyone else in history during his time. On religion, he has stated that he nor anyone else (including Christians and those with other gods) know what created the universe. He allows for the possibility of an intelligent source but didn't think it still existed. He was particularly clear in his conclusions regarding a personal god, ie one that cares personally about individual or groups, or one that has any influence on their existence.

In the last year of his life: "And in an interview with Professor William Hermanns, he said: “I cannot accept any concept of God based on the fear of life or the fear of death or blind faith. I cannot prove to you that there is no personal God, but if I were to speak of him I would be a liar.”
