The lasting effect of the Holocaust is not just what it did to the Jews, but what it did to Western Civilization. Before it happened, nobody would have believed that a Christian, civilized country could have ever done such a thing. After it happened, people had to admit that Germany had done it.

And they began to have trouble even using the terms "Christian" and "civilized" without putting scare quotes around them. The Holocuast and WWII produced a crisis of civilizational confidence in the West.
