I never read an Israeli historian (not that I've read all that many) who thought the Arabs were cowardly. Their armies were badly trained and they had command structures that were inflexible, so if Israel managed to make the war dynamic and fast moving it had a big advantage. But if Israel had to fight against dug-in defensive positions, even the Syrian army could be tough.

The Israelis refer to Hizbullah as the "A-Team" of terrorism. They know that they are Iranian trained and backed by Iranian forces and arms, and they have had six years to dig into South Lebanon. They didn't know exactly how much they had, and how many bunkers they had built, but they are finding out now.

I don't think the Israelis expected this to be fast or easy.
