Nicely put. In these cases, I can generally spot a path that looks viable to me, after a good bit of reading, and then use that as a benchmark to critique whatever the present administration does, changing my benchmark as I go along.

This time I cannot do that. The Gelb piece you posted yesterday, the WSJ piece, is the closest to something that made sense but it takes so many players to play their role, that it's also somewhere beyond unlikely. Particularly when the players with the most chips are either obdurate or ideologically blinded.
