Heck, Americans practically invented guerrilla warfare. The Native Americans used it against each other from time immemorial. We learned it from the Native Americans and used it in the Revolutionary War against the Brits.

The Irish learned it from the Brits.

The French also learned it from the Native Americans, and used it against the Nazis in WWII.

The Algerians learned guerrilla warfare from the French.

Etc.

One thing all the above conflicts have in common -- the warrior has the support of the people and can vanish into the populace because he is one of them.

Pop up, hit, and vanish only works if you are one of the populatce, can disappear into an alley and come out the other way whistling like "who, me?"
