Israel has put herself in a very difficult position, and I can't see how her "goals" can be achieved. Hezbollah is much more popular now than ever before, crossing now to Sunni and Christian support. The only way Israel can extricate herself is to walk away from the mess and let an international force take charge of occupying S. Lebanon and international good will rebuild the bombed out infrastructure.

And that, of course is exactly what Israel now wants. Israel doesn't want to occupy the lands herself, forever, and face ongoing guerilla attacks. Israel now wants guarantees that the UN force would act in the same fashion as Israel herself would, monitoring trade, border inspections, and control every day life in Lebanon, and take military action whenever and wherever Israel finds it necessary. I guess the reasoning is that once such a force is physically in place in South Lebanon, Israel would not be in a position to take things in her hands again.

Its clear that Israel cannot wipe out Hezbollah. Israel wants regime change, a government without any military capability, and a government that it can completely control.

I bet there is one other thing that Israel and the U.S. don't want, and that is free democratic elections.
