Random wine notes from summer 2006

Hot summers are not great for fine wines. I've had some really excellent wines lately and one cheapy that I'll put up against a NZ sauv. blanc at twice the price.

First the cheapo: 2005 Bogle Sauvignon Blanc Pay around $7-8 per bottle. This is a very juicy wine with good acid and lots of lime and green pepper tastes, making it perfect for many things off the grill. Bogle is a high value winery. They have changed their SB away from the french character and more towards the new world style. I love both but prefer less minerality with summer foods.

Domaine Grand Veneur Cotes du Rhone 2004 $16-19. I heard it described as a "baby Chateauneuf de Pape". Very yummy wine that should probably be cellared but I drank it anyway and loved it. I love grenache based wines. Bad thing is that Robert Parker has given this a high mark and it will probably disappear.

If you can find DOMAINE DU PAVILLON COTE ROANNAISE 2004 at $10-13 buy it. Kind of a odd boutique wine that I got from the Andrea Immer Robinson wine club. Ditto the one above. Thie Cote Roannaise has the "dirt" taste that comes with the region (ok, call it terroir). Very earthy, mushroomy and plummy tasting. Rosemary chicken or the Herb de Provence crown pork roast from the deli at Fresh Market are perfect for this wine.
