I think what is going on is MR heads require less signal to detect a recorded bit. Since less signal is required you can place the bits closer together, increase the linear density(bits/inch), with MR read heads. So you get in increase of say 30% or 40% with MR heads. Now, if you add KM to the picture you can increase the linear density because KM couples the flux signal from the recorded bit to the head better thereby increasing the signal the read head sees. This allows you to pack the bits even closer yielding an additional 20% to 40% increase in linear density.

I don't think it is an equalization issue, Although I do not understand why the media read with MR head have different densities from the center to the outside. Maybe it is a row to row issue.
