"Much of the growth in water use over the past half-century is from a vast increase in irrigation, which is used to produce 60 percent of the world’s grain."

And now our elected leaders in Washington want to do the same thing with corn for ethanol. The world's fresh water resources can't even meet today's demands (water levels are dropping worldwide), so we are going to use a lot more water to save 2-3% (at most) on our gasoline consumption. Smart, real smart!

Does anyone believe that in a drought year the corn ethanol farmers will sacrifice their crops so that the food farmers have enough water to grow their crops? Anyone? There is not enough food but here, have some ethanol!

Bacteria reproduce until they run out of resources and/or poison themselves with their own waste products. Then they all die. From that point of view it doesn't look like humans are any smarter than bacteria.
