If you take Iranian oil off the market, everyone will be paying $100 a barrel worldwide - that's $4 gasoline easily in the US if not higher.

The best you can to do is keep pressure where you can and, like you said, hope the leadership or the Iranian people come to their sense eventually. Sanctions are not a quick or sharp instrument in most cases - in fact they rarely change much for many years if ever.
