Some might say that israel has nukes and would wipe syria off the map. Thats true enough but israel certainly doesnt want to precipitate that chain of events.

Which is certainly a question should Syria decide to intervene in Lebanon against Israeli forces. But they've been there before and Syria knows that any first use of chemical weapons risked a direct retaliation by Israel. They also know their military is no match for Israel's.

And this might be the case as well, should Hizbullah use chemical weapons, since its obvious they would not have been able to develop such a capability without Syrian or Iranian assistance.

People think they are seeing a blood-bath now, have seen NOTHING, should such an event take place. It would create a MAJOR response by Israel because they SIMPLY cannot tolerate permitting a precedent to be established that WMDs can be used against a small state like Israel with no risk of massive retaliation in a similar manner.

It would be the equivalent of total war for Israel and they would lash out in a manner than would make the current conflict look like a paint-ball tournament.

That's the risk that exists in permitting a fanatical and uncontrollable armed militia like Hizbullah to run around like a loose cannon.
