Is your center a compromise between the two ideas, or does it actually contain its own ideas that would be held wherever the larger political winds shift?

If the main political spectrum in the US shifted to the left of the current Democratic party or to the right of the Republicans, should the center shift? Is it just what's in the middle or does it have some ideas in its own right which most liberals/progressives/social democrats, and most conservatives don't support, and which it would want to maintain even if they did come to be seen as extreme by most?
