Now you are drifting off to how many angels can fit on the head of a pin. Obviously it depends on how one defines center. I would compare it to the legal standard of a reasonable person's view of most issues, combined with looking where a majority of Americans come down on most issues.

Most Americans don't want no government or government-controlled everything. They believe in using force for defense or to help a good cause, but not reckless adventures (as defined by the reasonableness standard). They support a right to abortion even if no one actually likes abortion much. And so on and so on.

If 100% of Americans suddenly believed in killing everyone who is black, I would have to acknowledge that as a majority view but I would not consider it moderate and reasonable, and thus not in my view of centrism.

Why don't you give me a list of positions and programs you consider highly partisan, a list for each party, and I will give you my reaction as a swing voter trying to decide between the two.
