Archer Daniels to Make Brazil Biodiesel Thursday July 27, 12:22 pm ET biz.yahoo.com Archer Daniels Midland Building Biodiesel Plant in Brazil, Sees Higher Demand Under New Rules DECATUR, Ill. (AP) -- Archer Daniels Midland Co., a grains processor, on Thursday said it plans to build a biodiesel plant in Brazil to take advantage of a mandate in that country that diesel producers begin blending the alternative fuel with their products. The plant, which will use soybean oil as its feedstock, is expected to start production in 2007. Brazil has required that diesel fuel sold in that country include 2 percent biodiesel starting in 2008. The requirement increases to 5 percent biodiesel in 2013. Biodiesel is an alternative fuel made from vegetable oils that burns cleaner than petroleum-based diesel. The facility will be located in Rondonopolis in Brazil's Mato Grasso state, near Archer Daniels' soybean crushing plant, and will have capacity to produce 180,000 metric tons of the fuel each year. The company did not disclose the amount or terms of its planned investment.
