I can't and won't dismiss the Appeal to Authority as illogical or irrational when it comes to science.

Obviously it's being misused for claims like "9 out of 10 dentists prefer this toothpaste." Dentists don't study toothpaste for a living, they fix teeth.

But for scientists who follow all the scientific rules and come up with conclusions which can be replicated by others in the field, pass peer review and so forth, it seems to me that their conclusions deserve respect. If someone disagrees, and has an equally valid scientific methodology supporting that disagreement, then that's acceptable, as well.

I am thinking in particular of "Intelligent Design." If one wishes to validly dismiss consensus science in support of the Theory of Evolution, and claim that "Intelligent Design" is equally valid, they'd better have the facts on their side, or no cookie.
