There are two possible reasons why things are different today. The first is 9/11 which has created a long-term uncertainty (the thing the market hates most) about our futures and the future of the world. The second is the very low interest rates which attracted a lot of capital (which already had good reason to flee the stock market) into housing.

Now that interest rates are rising I think we are seeing some mutual fund inflows. For those who were trying to make a profit from housing (as opposed to simply having shelter) this would seem to be the time to be getting out of that market.

As for dot.com jobs - they were a child of the bubble - and I don't think we will see them come back here or overseas for a long time. Unless someone thinks up another Y2K to get things started. :^) Just some of my thoughts. Will
