15:30 DRAMs exceed forecast in Q2 - EE Times
EE Times reports worldwide DRAM rev rose to $7.5 bln in the second quarter, up 14.3% from $6.6 bln in the first quarter. iSuppli Corp. had expected rev growth of only 4.4%. Overall DRAM bit production growth worldwide increased by 10% during the quarter, compared to 15% during the same quarter last year. "Along with rising prices, tighter supplies and lower production, the DRAM market's strong performance in the second quarter was fueled by better-than-expected demand," said Nam Hyung Kim, principal analyst for iSuppli, in a statement. "PC core-logic chipset suppliers in the second quarter aggressively promoted products that supported DDR, boosting demand for the memory just as DRAM suppliers were phasing out production of the part." Many suppliers, Kim said, are phasing out production of DDR parts in favor of DDR2 devices. This, in turn, caused DDR prices to jump and DDR2 tags to fall, according to the firm... Micron Technology's (MU) DRAM sales contracted to $854 mln in the second quarter, down 3.6% from $886 mln in the first quarter, making it the only top-five supplier to suffer a rev decline for the period. Micron's DRAM Average Selling Price increased by a dramatic 10%, but its unit shipments declined by 12%, leading to its rev decline. |
