I have no idea why this response, Tim.

It wasn't a response to anything specific about Lieberman or McCain, but its a big picture general response about the idea of moving to the center. I tend to care more about larger ideas than specific politicians.

Lieberman looks to be getting the stuffing beaten out of him in Conn for doing so; McCain seems to get points for doing so

McCain gets points in the press, and maybe among moderates. but he loses points within his own party. Probably not nearly as many points as Lieberman has lost but still its not all positive for McCain.

Lieberman's' support for the Iraq war runs directly counter to a policy where most of his party brooks no opposition. Also its no longer popular even among the wider electorate. McCain's moves to the center are usually on subjects where Republicans are divided and/or on subjects where at least a small majority of the general electorate supports McCain's position. When you support the Iraq war Democrats mobilize against you. When you support campaign finance reform. They might get mobilized about immigration but the issue is a little more complex and there is some division in the party about exactly what to do.
