I'm not sure that efficiency is crucial for homeowners at least. Generally panels are only installed on part of a roof. The panel area is chosen to meet a target for power generation. More efficient panels will take up less space to meet that target, but now that panels are not heavy, I don't see a big advantage. I think you have it the wrong way round: the important thing is to get cost per watt down, and it's nice if the efficiency in watts generated per square metre goes up too.
