If we do not test that proposition, we will never know if there is a peaceful solution to the Iranian and North Korean nuclear challenges — and we will never have allies for a tougher policy if there isn’t. I thought this proposition was "tested" in 1994 when Carter unilaterally brokered a deal with N. Korea, which they then proceeded to violate. We certainly permitted Saddam to remain in power after 1991, believing his promises to disarm and no longer be a threat in the region. And all we got was support to terrorism and the UNSCOM runaround. I like most of Friedman's thoughts, but it takes two to dance.. And constantly threatening to envelope US cities in nuclear fire is not particularly conduscive to mutual trust. Hence, the 6 party talks. Hawk
