If you define this skirmish as between Hezbollah and Israel, then clearly the principals are Hezbollah and Israel. That is by your definition.

It's not by definition, mine or anybody else's but rather a fact. Who is firing rockets? Is Lebanon firing any rockets? No. Hezbollah and Israel are firing rockets, therefore, they are the principals. If you want the firing of rockets with its ensuing bleeding to stop via negotiations, which was your original premise,...

[What you said and what I questioned: We have to send in James Baker, Brent Scrowcroft, and Colin Powell to stop the bleeding. ]

...then you have to have Baker or whomever negotiate between the parties that are shooting at each other. There's no way to duck that.

What do you think about what "they" think is involved in negotiating a peace?

Of course what they think matters, but they are not the principals. The principals are the two parties that are shooting at each other and what it would take to get them to stop. Lebanon and the US have a role to play in brokering negotiations and implementing any agreement that might be reached, but they are not the principals.

Give me the logical conclusion, please.

The logical conclusion is that I think you don't have a grasp of the elements.

If Hezbollah and Israel are shooting at each other and your aim is to stop the bleeding by negotiation, then proposing paying off Iraq with $100 billion while denying the relevance of Hezbollah demonstrates that.
