As a former smoker, I don't think smokers have the right to make me pay higher health insurance premiums because they insist on harming their own health. That's what happens in group insurance contracts. The smokers are ill far more often than non-smokers.
Some states are finally coming around on this. Smokers in group plans should be required to pay a much higher premium than non smokers. And since real scientific research has clearly shown family members of heavy smokers also get lung diseases more often than the general population, might include them in the higher rates too. It just might encourage a few more addicted souls to quit. Coming up on my eleven year anniversary smoke-free here.
