Hezbollah a 'cancer,' MacKay says (from Canuckistan)
Globe & Mail ^ | 8/2/06 | Jeff Sallott

Foreign Minister Peter MacKay said Tuesday that Hezbollah is a terrorist organization that is like a "cancer" destroying democracy in Lebanon and made it clear that the Canadian government blames Hezbollah for the current conflict with Israel.

In an appearance before a special session of the House foreign affairs committee, however, Mr. MacKay also called on Israel to exercise the "utmost restraint" in dealing with the provocation so as to limit further civilian casualties.

As demonstrators on both sides of the divide gathered on Parliament Hill, Mr. MacKay said Canada supports a ceasefire and wants the United Nations to approve a "robust international force" to police a ceasefire if one can be established.

Mr. MacKay said he has personally appealed to Israel for a halt to hostilities so that Canadians and citizens of other countries trapped in Lebanon can be safely evacuated. About 13,000 Canadians have fled since the fighting began.

He told Opposition MPs that "Canada cannot be neutral on fundamental issues" and that is why the Conservative government condemns Hezbollah as a terrorist group that attacked a democracy.

About 250 demonstrators condemning the Harper government for its stand in support of Israel protested on the steps of Parliament.
