I think Cheney and Rumsfeld are two holdover neo-cons.

Right now, this administration sees as its legacy a ME being dominated by a more and more powerful Iran. I don't think these guys can stand an outcome like that and the only way they could do something about it would be military action in support of Israel.

That's why I'm not so sure that Israel isn't trying to push the envelope further and further in the hope that it will precipitate some type of overt action from Syria and or Iran.
(With the implicit acceptance of this administration.)

That's just my own theory and it may have no merit, but looking at things from Israel's perspective (and the neo-cons) I think they all realize what a toxic environment all these missteps in Iraq and elsewhere have caused and I STILL think they would like to somehow set things straight while they still have a strategic opportunity to do so.
