As I said yesterday, there are many different accounts. Unless confirmed by both sides, I am always suspicious about any so-called definitive view. AP is generally a pretty reliable source.

Clearly, Israel has been far more adept at the propaganda wars, in particular in the U.S. There was an excellent article in the Spiegel in Germany to what length Israel goes to accommodate and influence journalists or news reports.

Obviously none of these resources can be mustered by Hezbollah. As was clearly evident in the war on Iraq, news accounts were disastrously wrong and tainted even though presented in the most authoritative fashion! It is of utmost importance to be extremely suspicious of prominent news accounts particularly so if major news service information show divergences and if one party has significantly more resources and influence.

But, just to repeat, this particular event is not of significant importance. Let's be clear, the Israeli army and intelligence services have operated many times across the border in Lebanon and killed Hezbolla and Palestinian operatives in Lebanon and elsewhere not to mention taking prisoner elected representatives (civilians). This has been a low intensity war since 1948. It won't stop here and unless the self righteousness stops, this conflict will continue on for many years and from now on with much increased risk of a widening conflict.

I believe, the urgency for Israel to find a non war based resolution to the conflict soon has increased dramatically. The war in Iraq IMO has changed the power equation dramatically and has increased the resolve of the Islamic street if not also their governments in countries in the ME and elsewhere. Hezbollah has now proven that it is an enemy to be reckoned with even with its feeble resources. The same can be said about the insurgency in Iraq.

I believe that Israel's ground offensive is intended to prove to Arabs and the Muslim world in general that Israel is still as dominant as ever. However, just the fact that a ragtag army like Hezbollah has stood up this long has likely forever destroyed the notion of Arab military impotence. A very dangerous state of affairs.

I hope that Israeli leadership realizes this rather sooner than later and do not search for a resolution using war, however unlikely. I think that continuing the present policy will be prove to be a huge miscalculation.
