Of course. Why is that so hard to understand? The government regulates all kinds of things, like how fast I can drive on public roads, and I accept that as a necessary fact of life.

Large publicly traded companies are run by people who are under intense pressure to increase earnings. They will often act contrary to the public interest. Without government regulation you get, among other things, environmental devestation and financial malfeasance. Just look at history.
