No reason to slander Mr Grant further as a slaver.

I have no intention of trying to slander the general; I am merely pointing out that slavery still existed in the North at the time of the Great Unpleasantness, a fact that few folks seem to realize, especially since it goes against the prevailing myth of the crusading angelic North forcing the evil South to capitulate on moral grounds.

I actually admire Grant (and am distantly related to him by marriage). When he stayed with local families on his campaigns throughout the South, they were almost invariably won over by his humble nature and basic decency.

There is an antebellum brick mansion in Ringgold GA that still stands today because he stayed there and for whatever the reason, it was the only building spared when the Union army torched the town out of spite as they pulled out.

Grant had given orders to spare the town, but somehow it still caught fire as the troops moved on. Hooker's corps was quite ill that Cleburne had so thoroughly thrashed them in a rear guard action at the gap just beyond the town and apparently took it out on the town itself.

Well, if they thought it was a good thing they'd have named it in those documents.

Have you forgotten that they would not allow slaves to vote? Or that they considered them to be worth only three fifths of a "real citizen"?
