I mentioned the Nasdaq double counting situation to a friend. My friend asked his broker (Everen Securities) and got a little different story.

The broker asked some questions at Everen and was told:
If a market maker buys 100 shares of stock from an individual and then sells those 100 shares to another individual, on the same day , the shares are not double counted. It's recorded as 100 shares.

Continuing to pursue the story.
