The French Turn Against Nuclear Energy [Spiegel]

France is one of the world's leading producers of nuclear energy. But a new poll shows that the French aren't happy about this anymore.

Anti-nuclear activists were an unknown species in France -- at least until this year. With 59 nuclear reactors, France is one of the world's main producers of nuclear energy, and there has been a consensus for decades among French politicians that the nuclear industry should be expanded. Even left-wing parties have been part of the consensus -- with the exception of the marginalized French Green Party.

But as research released last week by the BVA opinion research center shows, the general population no longer shares the views of official Paris. Not even a third of 1,000 people polled by BVA believe nuclear energy is the best way to cover electricity demand in the future. A full 84 percent of those questioned want alternative energy sources, and 80 percent would like to see a referendum on whether France should abandon nuclear energy entirely. Politicians are unruffled by public skepticism, and President Jacques Chirac continues to pursue his project of developing a new, "fourth generation" of nuclear reactors, which he hopes will produce considerably less nuclear waste. Chirac sees the expansion of nuclear energy as a way to curb oil consumption. But his policies may -- unexpectedly -- have to face the ire of the voting public.
