I don't see that Intel "admitted" to anything. The 1 million figure likely was the number of wafers started at the time the person said it. I think people here are making too much of it as a goal for the quarter.

The way I see it, Otellini was asked about the ramp rate, and the answer was "last time we introduced a new product it took a whole year to reach one million units. This time it will take 10 weeks." He didn't follow that with: "and when we reach one million, we'll close the fab and dismiss the workers".

Besides, the one million number is more likely limited by need for matching mother boards and chipsets, than by supply of processors.
