It is a no-win situation for Israel, that's what is so fiendishly clever about Hezbollah's provocation of Israel - Israel is screwed if they don't respond and bogged down and undermined outside Israel if they do.

Hence my assertion earlier that Hezbollah is playing the US and Israel like a fiddle, knowing how they must react and how it will be perceived around the globe. As long as Hezbollah survives the retaliation and lives to fight and expound their agenda another day, they have achieved their goals in this campaign.

As Sultan noted they can survive many years of "setbacks" and carry on. That is a typical trait of the many successful or still-surviving multi-decade insurgencies around the world.
