Osama bin Laden's #1 grievance was the presence of infidel troops in sacred land of Saudi Arabia and its support for its rulers.

Why were American troops in Saudi Arabia? To protect Saudi Arabia from an Iraqi invasion, and to protect Kuwait from another Iraqi invasion.

Why does America care about the region? Oil. Otherwise it might let its powers clobber each other unhindered like in the Congo. But America can't afford to lose access to the oil.

Now please explain how any of this would be different if Israel had been destroyed in 1967 (before the US gave it any support, btw), or had never been.
