I am delighted to read that ruling. After working in family courts for years as both a probation officer, a foster care worker, and a protective service worker, I am convinced that the concept of the mom-dad-child family is considered the only way because it's what we are most familiar with. A loving, stable, supportive environment is what a child needs.

Any configuration can be successful, though single parents often face more difficult challenges and families that include stepparents and siblings can have a very tough time.
Marriage today has gotten very far from that "ideal" some here hold sacred. If children can be part of stable, loving home, regardless of its make-up, I believe is one of the strongest factors leading to a healthy child.

I understand that there isn't a great deal of research yet on children raised by gay couples, but my money is on results that will parallel hetero couples: i.e., the stability and love in the environment not the sex of the parents determines the quality of the home and the health of the child.
