You're making the same mistake the majority of this thread made before we invaded Iraq. Yes the Iraqis hated Saddam, but that doesn't mean that they would welcome Bush. The corresponding principle regarding Israel is that yes, the Arabs have conflicts with each other but that doesn't mean that they love Israel. If anything, the dustup in Lebanon is uniting the Arabs.

This motivated me to look up a statement from early on.

Mr. President,

With your permission, I would like to make a personal appeal to my esteemed Lebanese colleague.

Your Excellency,

You know, deep down, that if you could, you would add your voice to those of your brave countrymen. You know, deep down in your heart, that you should really be sitting here, next to me, voicing the same opinion. You know that what we are doing is right, and, if we succeed, your country will be the real beneficiary. I am sure many of our colleagues around this table and in this chamber, including many or our neighbours, share this sentiment.

That would be the Israeli UN ambassador explaining to his esteemed Lebanese counterpart what a favor Israel is doing to Lebanon by bombing the crap out of it. I have a vague recollection of similar statements issued on the occasion of previous Israeli adventures in Lebanon, but that would be somewhat harder to look up. I seriously wonder what Santayana would make of Israel in the Lebanese context.
