I agree with most of your assessments, Snowshoe, except the one about Uncle Frank pulling a "Wally Hickel" and running on a third party ticket. I suspect most of Murkowski's supporters are royalist Republicans, who will support the party ticket in November even if it's not their guy. In fairness though, I could be wrong; I don't think I know anyone who's supporting the Governor so I'm not sure where his support comes from. (for those non-Alaskans who aren't following this, Wally Hickel was the former US Interior Secretary and Republican Alaska governor from the 60's. In 1990 a fairly liberal candidate won the Republican gubernatorial primary with a plurality. Hickel jumped in as a third party candidate and actually won, serving as Governor until 1994. Then we had a similar problem, in which a pro-abortion candidate won the GOP primary and Hickel's Lt. Governor ran a third party candidacy. He split the vote and Alaska got a liberal Democrat as governor.) FWIW I saw Hickel just recently - at a Sarah Palin for Governor rally, making a supporting speech.
