<greater in number> The UN took action to repel Iraq from Kuwait -- and the coalition was astonishingly broad -- a true act of leadership from George Bush Sr. to both knit together a large coalition AND do it through the UN.

You always drift off into lala land when the issue of the UN role in the invasion of Iraq is raised (there was no role). The UN did not invade Iraq -- that was a US-led action conducted outside the UN. When the US puts together a gang, however it is done, it is not the UN merely because a bunch of people sign on. In this case the gang included many countries that could easily be bought, and a few who thought they should go along with the US -- notably Britain. The UN however did NOT go along with this invasion.

The US, using your definition, took it upon itself to behave in an extremist manner -- the same kind of behavior you say you condemn. Now you say, well, since we invaded their country and destroyed their government, we should take the opportunity to create a democracy. It is like breaking into somebody's house, destroying the furniture, killing the family pets (and some of the family itself) and then saying "as long as we are here perhaps we should do the dishes". The US is a military aggressor, invading, killing and occupying Iraq -- it is a small wonder that it has gone so tragically wrong for us there. According to recent reports 6,000 Iraqis died in the last two months -- mission accomplished, pat yourself on the back, you have created a screaming mess for them and a quagmire for our military.
