You gain a little more esteem IMO if you restated that to say "it was not worth creating the insurrection and sectarian violence".

I don't think that is definitely true at this point. If the situation could be resolved without any major increase in those factors, and if the violence doesn't drag on for many more years, than I think it was still worth it. OTOH its hardly a forgone conclusion that the violence won't last at the current level or higher for many years, and if it does than looking back from that point I think a reasonable person would have to say it wasn't worth it.
